Notes and Credits:

1. Each entry in the table above shows the head of household and the numbers of free white males and free white females (including the head of household) in each age category. In the last three columns are entered the number of persons in each household employed in agriculture, commerce, and manufacturing. Not all 1820 census categories are shown above. The census also contained columns for the enumeration of male and female slaves, male and female free colored persons, foreigners not naturalized, and all other persons except Indians, not taxed, in the household. None of the above households had entries in any of these categories. There were no printed forms and so the individual census-takers made up their own forms which differed somehat in the categories that appeared. Most of the forms I saw resembled the table above.

2. The actual age categories that appeared were of the form: "at least a years of age and under b years of age". In the above column headings, I have interpreted this as "a to b-1". Note that there will be some double counting of males in the 16--18 category and the 16--25 category.

These records were transcribed from the microfilm by Brian McFann.
